The South Holland Business Association (SHBA) is aware that growing businesses and improving profits and cash flow are priorities for its members. SHBA’s mission is to advance the interest of its members by doing what it can to help them to achieve these goals. On October 28, 2021, SHBA hosted a networking webinar featuring speaker Todd Sheppard, Regional Director of Partner America. Mr. Sheppard shared some insights that he has gleaned over his 13-year career of helping businesses thrive. He shared with participants how they can utilize the expert assistance that the Partner America offers.
Mr. Sheppard said that most business owners and operators are so busy working in their businesses that they don’t have time to work on their businesses. He noted that it is important to periodically evaluate your business by considering:
- where your business is now
- where your business is trying to go
- what is keeping your business from getting to that goal
Although each business is unique, Mr. Sheppard said that at some point during its life cycle, it is common for every organization to experience challenges related to:
- finding good people
- acquiring new business
- offsetting rising costs
Mr. Sheppard stressed that in order for a business to deal with these challenges it cannot operate in 2021 and beyond, like they did in 2019. He recommended that business owners create a vision for the future and develop a written plan. The plan should:
- include measurable and attainable goals
- identify the job functions that are needed and detail the process for hiring and developing the right people
- describe the technology necessary to operate efficiently and effectively
- set forth the desired legacy of the business
Partner America started in 1999 as a joint project between the U.S. Conference of Mayors and American Management Services. The mission of this public-private partnership is to help small and mid-sized businesses succeed. One of the organization’s motivating beliefs is that helping a business to thrive is not only good for the business, but it also helps the surrounding communities by generating more jobs and increasing tax revenue.
Mr. Sheppard said, “Partner America primarily assists businesses that are struggling as well as those that are doing okay, but want greater success in the future.” The organization works with businesses that are incorporated and have been in operation for at least one year. Partner America’s senior executives, services, and resources will help business owners develop a step-by-step action plan that will help them advance their business.
